Tarabai Desai Eye Hospital is bringing affordable eye care to India's westerns state of Rajasthan where rural populations frequently have no or very little access to vision health. We provide a state-of-the-art hospital facility and are running hundreds of eye camp every year. We treat over 45,000 patients annually.
State of the Art Hospital
Tarabai Desai Eye Hospital is now the largest provider of eye care in the non-government sector in Jodhpur district and is a regional centre for excellence for Western Rajasthan. The 50-bed facility is staffed by full-time ophthalmologists and paramedical staff and a new annex is being constructed to accommodate more patients and super-specialty services.
Our hospital is equipped with the latest eye care technology and our surgical techniques are at par with the latest global standards. All cataract surgery done at the hospital since 1991 is microsurgical ECCE with or without an IOL. Since 1998 Phacoemulsification for cataract, retinal detachment surgery and laser photocoagulation surgery has been started. These latter techniques are not easily available even at local private and state-run facilities. To learn more about our facility and technology click here.
Telemedicine
The Indian Space and Research Organization have established a telemedicine center at our hospital and recognized us as an expert center to provide ophthalmic consultations to 19 village resource centers in Rajasthan.
Low Vision Center
Our low vision center has been operating since 1987 where we treat patients with legal blindness by fitting magnifiers and telescopes.
Often all that's needed to help cure blindness is the removal of a cataract or providing access to simple surgical care and medication. Our biggest challenge arises in creating lasting, scalable health structures that can deliver quality care to a large population that is scared of modern medicine, has little to no awareness about eye care, and cannot afford to pay steep hospital fees.
We know the only way to make a real difference is to strengthen our outreach to them. This means bringing medical camps to the people and offering help and education in a way that promotes trust and empowers them to access affordable treatment. Here's how we do it.
We partner with local government and non-profits to run free eye camps that bring care directly to those in need. These camps offer a safe and welcoming place for people to learn about vision care.
In 2022, we organized 90 free eye camps spread over four Districts of Rajasthan. In these eye camps 14,848 patients were examined and treated free of charge. A total of 1387 free eye operations were performed, almost all of which were for cataract, the leading cause of blindness in India.
All patients were operated by microsurgery and received an artificial lens implant (IOL). This has been possible through the experience gained through the years and the unique espirit de corps of our team. Almost all of the operations were performed by the state of the art phacoemulsification technique.
With the support of our world-leading faculty, we offer training to many types of healthcare workers – from nurses in regional hospitals to teachers in remote areas. It takes place through our in-person training camps, online mentoring platform, and our long-term grassroots outreach programs. The hospital has conducted several training workshops in Jodhpur and has 40 research publications in peer reviewed national & international journals. The staff has presented their work and conducted training courses in several national & international conferences including the AAO, ESCRS, AACO, AIOS, European SOE and World Ophthalmology Congress.
We are grateful for the generosity of our exceptional volunteer ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and biomedical engineers. These professionals freely give up their time every year to work in our hospitals and train our new doctors and technicians, while our senior doctors often travel to other countries to share their expertise with peers and volunteer in other countries. Our professionals have volunteered their services overseas in Cambodia and Ghana for several years to perform free cataract surgery and transfer microsurgery skills to their local colleagues.
We work to educate communities about eye health via radio broadcasts, film screenings, social media, and educational materials. With the help of grassroots partners, we also distribute vital antibiotics and basic medications to treat and prevent serious eye conditions.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in India. A simple artificial lens implantation restores site completely. It is our most widely treated condition.
In Diabetic Retinopathy, retina blood vessels are damaged, leading to permanent blindness. It can be prevented with timely last treatment and ANTI-VEGF injections.
Glaucoma is a chronic and progressive disease resulting in damage to the optic nerve. Early detection and care are needed to prevent permanent and total vision loss.
Entropion is an inversion or inward turning of the eyelid margin. Trichiasis happen when when the eyelashes are directed backward toward the globe. It is one of the most common eyelid malpositions. If the condition persists, scarring of the cornea can occur and affect vision.
Strabismus — commonly known as crossed eyes — is misalignment of the eyes. In children, uncorrected strabismus can lead to amblyopia where the brain starts to ignore signals sent by the weaker, misaligned eye leading to loss of vision and cosmetic problems. It is a treatable condition.
Certain eye diseases currently have no medical or surgical treatment. We help achieve vision improvement with special optical and non optical devices. It has helped millions with increased physical and psychological health, and improved satisfaction with the quality of life.
